CanPower is an action-packed, high energy power skating program that focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. Our coaches teach skills, techniques and conditioning drills in a progressive format that emphasizes how skills apply to game situations.

  • Prerequisites: Skaters must be able to skate backwards and forwards and stop independently (passed CanSkate Level 3).
  • Equipment: CSA approved hockey helmets are required, and helmet cages are strongly recommended. Skaters must wear full hockey gear (shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey pants, shin pads, gloves) and hockey skates. Mouthguards are recommended but not required. Gear is not available to rent, so participants must make arrangements to have full gear by the first session. Participants without appropriate gear will not be permitted on the ice.

CanPower Edgeworks is a program that focuses primarily on proper skating technique, power, balance, agility moves and speed.  Good skating and the ability to be unpredictable has proven to be a great asset in the game.  The program is a learning experience for all levels of hockey players and will involve a focus on technical corrections, where needed. Coaches:

Mary Yarush - with 30 years of specialized hockey coaching and 39 years of figure skating coaching, Mary has an enthusiastic, focused approach to skill development.  Working with players from Intro to Junior A level, Mary is the "go to" hockey skills expert for several high profile organizations in the Ottawa area.

 

Leonid Birinberg - graduated from the State Central Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Education with a specialization in Physical Education and Sport and has coached internationally.  Leonid is exceptionally effective at teaching skaters to develop and master an efficient, powerful stride.   His intensity, enthusiasm and focus on technical excellence results in significantly improved performance in a short period of time.

Jill Leonard - has been coaching skating for 16 years.  She has coached National level figure skaters and worked with hockey and ringette players to improve agility and technique.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education from Mount St Vincent University.  She brings her knowledge of teaching to the ice to ensure skaters learn the best and quickest way they can.

Please Note: Ice surface will be shared with NSC skaters as an OPEN

 

All drop-ins must pay $45/session.

Package includes 45 minutes off-ice training, followed by 50 minutes ofon ice . Off ice provides further development of agility, balance and control through sport specific training.  Off-Ice will be held on Friday from 5:00 - 5:45 pm in Hall E at the Nepean Sportsplex.

Skaters are required to bring their own exercise/yoga mat for the off-ice training and wear appropriate exercise clothing.

Program Description:

To qualify, the skater must have completed CanSkate level 3. 

A helmet is madatory until Canskate level 5 is completed. If you have any questions on what the qualifications are please call the office and I will be happy to provide you with a blank report card.

Sessions is a 30-minute off ice session followed by 50 minutes on ice. RisingSTAR is the bridge between CanSkate and STARSkate (Figure Skating). At this stage, we recommend that your skater skates twice each week to fully develop their skills and technique. We suggest pairing each session with a CanSkate session or an additional RisingSTAR session.

Skaters participate in a group-based skating session, learning more advanced figure skating specific skating skills. Figure skates required.

Our CanSkate program is for skaters who are 4 years of age and up.

CanSkate, Skate Canada’s flagship program is one of the most sought-after skating programs in Canada. CanSkate was developed by experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a progressive manner. Designed for beginners of all ages, the focus is on fun, participation and basic skill development. Participants earn ribbons and badges as skills are mastered. Skaters are taught in a group lesson format by Skate Canada professional coaches and supported by trained program assistants.CanSkate is the foundational and feeder program for all other Skate Canada club and community ice sport programs.The CanSkate learning environment is enhanced through fun, music and colourful teaching aids and props along with praise and feedback from coaches. This unique intro-to-ice environment is designed to stimulate and maintain interest and enthusiasm among skaters, allowing participants to gain the physical competency and confidence to remain active for
life!

Program Objectives:

• To provide participants and families with a safe, welcoming and inclusive first experience to the sport of skating
• To develop skating and motor skills through natural learning phases (introduction, acquisition, retention/mastery)
